About Role

As a Data Scientist (or Junior Data Scientist) at invent.ai, you are the technical owner of one or more client accounts. Once a customer’s solution goes live, the account transfers to our Client Excellence team — and that’s where you come in. You are the technical person clients rely on for new features, bug fixes, production support, analysis, and reporting.

You work closely with a Client Excellence Manager (CXM) on each of your accounts. You are responsible for the long-term technical health of the solution: keeping pipelines running, building new capabilities, debugging production issues, and presenting your work to clients. This is a hands-on technical role with significant client exposure from day one.

We hire at two levels for this track — Junior Data Scientist (early-career) and Data Scientist (1–4 years experience). Specific level is determined during the interview process based on experience and demonstrated capability.

What You Will Do

• Monitor pipelines daily across all your accounts — be the first to know when something fails, not the last
• Investigate root causes systematically — when a pipeline fails or a bug appears, follow our 13-step problem solving workflow: reproduce, root-cause, design, develop, validate, deploy, validate again, document
• Build and maintain solutions across the lifecycle — requirements gathering with the CXM and client, technical design, development, testing, deployment, and client communication
• Write clean, tested, reviewed code — no untested merges, no production-only testing, no code that only you can understand six months from now
• Respond to Jira tickets within 24 hours — acknowledge, clarify scope, set timeline expectations
• Attend weekly client meetings prepared — present your work in business terms, not implementation details, and answer technical questions confidently
• Build and maintain Tableau dashboards, SQL queries, and pipeline outputs that the client uses to make business decisions
• Maintain runbooks and Confluence documentation — your accounts must be coverable by a teammate when you are on PTO
• Raise blockers within hours of hitting them, not days
• Be cost-conscious — write efficient code, watch for oversized clusters and redundant data, flag optimization opportunities
• Provide clear, technical input for post-mortems on incidents in your accounts
• Continuously grow — invest in product knowledge, deep-dives, and skill development

AI-First Expectations

AI tools are central to how Invent data scientists work. This is not a side experiment — it's how we deliver. We expect you to:

• Use agentic coding tools daily — Claude Code, Cursor, MCP-connected workflows — for development, debugging, code review, and documentation
• Use AI to accelerate investigation — log analysis, data flow tracing, root-cause hypothesis generation, edge-case identification
• Use AI to lift code quality — generate tests, catch edge cases, refactor, and review your own code before submitting PRs
• Demonstrate strong human-in-the-loop discipline — catch hallucinated functions, fabricated APIs, and incorrect logic in AI output. Never ship code you don't fully understand
• Show concrete examples of multi-step AI workflows you have used — agentic, not single-prompt autocomplete
• Stay current — AI tooling evolves quickly, and we expect you to keep up

What We Are Looking For

• BSc / MSc degree in a quantitative field — Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research, Mathematics, Statistics, or equivalent
• 0–4 years of professional experience (we hire at JDS and DS levels)
• Solid programming skills in Python, with SQL fluency. PySpark experience is a strong plus — if you don't have it, you should be excited to learn
• Demonstrated AI-first ways of working — daily use of Claude Code, Cursor, or comparable agentic coding tools, with concrete examples of how AI has made you measurably more effective
• Strong analytical and root-cause reasoning skills — you don't just patch the symptom, you understand why something broke
• Familiarity with version control (Git), code review culture, and standard software engineering practices
• Experience with data pipelines, ETL, and cloud data platforms (Databricks, Delta Lake, Airflow) is a plus
• Experience with Tableau, Power BI, or Looker is a plus
• Excellent written and verbal English — you will present technical work to clients
• Proactive communication — you raise blockers early, you ask clarifying questions, and you don't go silent under pressure
• Ownership mindset — you take responsibility for outcomes, not just outputs
